…Dr Kale explains

Nigeria Bureau for Statistic this week released a revised data on unemployment which saw a drastic reduction in the number of people without job in Nigeria (Unemployed). The figure puts Nigeria’s current unemployment rate at 6.4% from 28%. By this latest figure, Nigeria has lower unemployed people than countries like South Africa (25.2%), or France (10.6%). The data also showed that the unemployment rate in Nigeria is slightly higher than that of the United States whose unemployment rate currently stands at 5.5%.

Outraged by this claim, Nigerians took to Twitter to register their disagreement with Dr Yemi Kale, the Statistician-general of the Federation. Many of them argued that the new figure is a huge joke. However, Dr Kale through series of tweets explained that his organisation followed a globally accepted methodology in arriving at the latest number, and that the unemployment rate of 6.4% and over 13 million underemployed people as reported in the new data is not low.
