GTCO commends Mrs. Jonathan for re-affirming Amaechi’s record on projects

By Ibim Semenitari

The Greater Together Campaign Organisation, GTCO, has commended the wife of President Goodluck Jonathan, Dame Patience, for acknowledging the performance rating of Rivers State Governor, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, on projects in the state.

Dame Jonathan, while addressing a South South Women Zonal rally of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Port Harcourt yesterday, Wednesday, March 18 2015, had acknowledged that the Amaechi Administration had completed the Rivers State Government Gas Turbine at Omoku, the Eleme Junction interchange and the Rivers State sections of the bad Federal roads leading to and from Rivers to Imo and Abia States, respectively.

However, while thanking Mrs. Jonathan for standing up for truth, GTCO which is the outfit championing the governorship of Dr. Dakuku Adol Peterside of the All Progressives Congress, APC, pointed out incorrect assertions and claims made by the First Lady. “In this statement, while we partly have commended Mrs. Jonathan for re-affirming that Governor Chibuike Amaechi had completed major and critical levels of infrastructure in the state, we would most respectfully correct the misleading impressions she must have built in her viewers’ mind. The completed Omoku Gas Turbine, a power project initiated, wholly-owned and completed by the Rivers State Government, was started by Dr Peter Odili and was 30 percent completed when Governor Chibuike Amaechi took over office. Governor Amaechi has since completed it.
The Omoku IPP project of the Federal Government was awarded by President Olusegun Obasanjo towards the end of his tenure and has been abandoned for the last five years. As at today that project is 15 percent completed a fact that our dear first lady very conveniently overlooked in her attempt to appropriate the Gas Turbine built and completed by the Rivers State Government.”

In a statement in Port Harcourt on Thursday signed by its Director of Communications, Mrs. Ibim Semenitari, GTCO drew the attention of the public to the misleading claims made by Mrs. Jonathan, saying it was imperative that such misinformation be straightened before people go home with them in lieu of the truth.

“Politics and electioneering cannot erase lies when told nor would impersonation be tolerated no matter done by whom. It is in this reality that we make bold to assert that the Eastern By-Pass road which Mrs. Jonathan claimed was a project undertaken by her husband, is a Rivers State Government project initiated by the Chief Rufus Ada-George regime and completed by former Governor Peter Odili and refurbished by the Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi Administration. The Federal Government has no hands whatsoever, in the design, construction and completion of that road. We believe that President Jonathan knows the truth, and could not have sent his wife to lie and ridicule him on national TV.

“Similarly, Mrs. Jonathan’s claim that the Jonathan/Sambo Administration constructed the Eleme Junction inter-change and repaired the damaged section of the horrible Port Harcourt-Aba Expressway as well as the Owerri-Omerelu end of the Port Harcourt-Owerri Expressway, is only an after-thought in futility meant to win-over a Rivers population angry at the criminal neglect the Administration she mentioned had imposed on the state. They are not in the least convinced that President Jonathan, who barely a month ago, admitted in the open that he did not execute a single project in the past 6 years in Rivers State, has now remembered the ‘projects’ he executed in the state, and their locations. Honour is the soul of The Presidency but where it has been turned into an Office that manufactures lies, then, Nigerians have reason to be worried. The other day it was an imaginary conversation with the King of Morocco, today it’s a catalogue of fictitious projects in Rivers State.

“We suspect that Mrs. Jonathan’s further claim that President Jonathan had repaired the Onne road in Eleme is simply because she over flies in each time she visits her hometown Okrika. We urge the first lady to travel home by road during her next visit to enable her appreciate the plight of her people who suffer untold hardship on a daily basis on that road. Only deliberate mischief would make anyone claim that that Onne – Eleme portion of the East West road had been made usable by the Federal Government. The road in the last 6 years, has been the night mare of motorists and travellers who ply it.

On the Onne Port claims, we simply wonder how the Jonathan adminsteration can lay claims to the building of the Onne oil and gas free zone or lay claims to the jobs created by someone else’s foresight. President Jonathan had the opportunity to write his name in gold by allowing the building of the Train 7 of the Bonny NLNG project that would have created over 10,000 jobs for Rivers people insisting instead that the Brass LNG project must begin first before the Bonny project would be allowed to see the light of day. How sad for a man whose wife claims is from Rivers State. We encourage our first lady, Mrs. Jonathan not to appropriate what are others’ efforts through the back door just to convince a sceptical population.

It also appears that our dear first lady is ignorant of the fact that Rivers state does not have irrigation needs as it experiences year round rainfall so her reference to dry season farming in Rivers State is sadly amusing. We wish to appeal to her instead to encourage her husband to assist Rivers people expedite the World Bank and ADB facilities meant to deliver portable water to the state.

“We again thank her for graciously hyping the achievements of Gov. Amaechi but would suggest that she checks her facts and the records records next time before speaking. Rivers people know that the Administration of President Jonathan has not executed any project in the state, a fact Jonathan himself admitted barely a month ago, we also have borne with equanimity his excuse that the deprivation was because he did not want to be seen as being partial or biased. It is for this reason that Rivers people have sought green pastures where they can be guaranteed development rather than excuses that leave them holding not just the shorter end of the stick but empty vapour.
