Revealed: Why Clem Onwunna left APC

Fresh facts have emerged over the reason behind the recent defection of the Pro-Chancellor, Imo State University, Mazi Clement Owunna, from the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, in the state to the All Progressive Grand Alliance, APGA.

Imo initiative can authoritatively confirm that Mazi Owunna who had hitherto enjoyed cordial relationship with the state governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha, left the APC over his interest in the Okigwe senatorial seat in the forthcoming general election.

It was discovered that the party ticket which has been in fierce contest between him and the Rt. Hon. Benjamin Uwajumogu, the Speaker of the Imo State House of Assembly, whom sources said has the cutting edge and the political sagacity to deeply entrench the party in the Okigwe senatorial zone to win elections.

Investigations further revealed that to ensure that the APC firmly closed ranks in the zone to defeat other political parties in the forthcoming general elections, the state governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha, immediately waded into the matter and subsequently invited the duo of Mazi Owunna and Rt. Hon. Uwajumogu in the presence of party leaders such as, Chief EJK Onyebuchi, Sir Marcellinus Nlemigbo and Chief Emeka Ozuomba.

Report has it that several entreaties made by the governor to each of them to resolve and allow a consensus candidate to emerge from among them hit the rocks, as both men stucked to their guns and agreed to battle it all out at the party’s open primary.

In one of the reports credited to him, Mazi Owunna had alleged, while lamenting the he was not adopted by the Governor and the party for the senate position, after rendering financial assistance to governor’s campaign in 2011 to the tune of N200million.

Investigations further revealed that the recent commissioning of the N150million IMSU Recreation Park Bungalow by the state governor, as facilitated by the Pro-Chancellor, is already causing ripples among relevant stakeholders in the government circle, the press and the institution, as different insinuations have it that the said project was unnecessarily over-priced with a view to score cheap political point, as was the case in his much trumpeted N200million financial assistance to the governor which investigations revealed was a gold card support valued less than N10million.

Feelers on the day of the commissioning which saw Mazi Owunna’s supporters jeering him at the event, apparently with a view to swaying the governor’s support for outright adoption, have it that the Pro-Chancellor got the latest shock of his entire life when it dawned on him that even the governor, as well as the generality of the University community were not happy with the said amount of the project.

It continued that in order to quell the seeming raging situation at the event, the governor in his wisdom, subsequently calmed the frail nerves by boycotting any political statement in favor of Owunna. This development according to reports embarrassed the Pro-Chancellor, who hurriedly threw-in the towel and subsequently declared for the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA.

But in a swift reaction, some members of the party who spoke to our reporters under the condition of anonymity, sharply disagreed with the former IMSU Pro-chancellor’s assertion and maintained that the governor must not be cowed or blackmailed because of gold card financial support membership that was not up to N10million.

They however, absolved the governor of any complicity in the Owunna political debacle, maintaining that the governor’s insistence on a transparent, free and fair primaries for the party in choosing its standard bearers was in line with the policy trust of the All Progressives Congress, APC, to engender internal democracy and sanitize the polity.

“What is Mazi Owunna afraid of? He should please save us that grandstanding ploy because of a mere financial support which was not up to N10million. Is he saying that for supporting the governor, he has automatically bought over the party, as well as the governor? As far as the party is concerned, we have a well-defined laws and modus-Operandi, and I believe the governor was trying to align himself with democratic framework of the party which necessitated his call for primaries to hold since they did not reach a consensus,” the source stated.

Those interviewed by our reporters, also wondered why the business man, as a disciplined party faithfully, should not subject himself to the internal mechanisms of the party if indeed he loves the party as earlier claimed, adding that the All Progressives Congress in Okigwe zone was firmly intact and stronger too, as those according to them, who deceived him into committing what they described as such “political suicide” still remained in the party.
