2015: Atiku Abubakar Defects Again!

CTeuKgRSUntitledAtiku Abubakar today became the latest politician who is taking advantage of the recent crisis in the People Democratic Party (PDP) to defect to the rival All Progressives Congress (APC). In a statement issued and personally signed on Sunday, Atiku who is strongly rumored to be eyeing the presidential ticket of APC, said that his decision to join APC “was not to satisfy some of my friends and associates” but rather in keeping with his principle of “putting the interest of Nigeria first” ( Yes, Atiku’s interest is Nigeria’s interest!)

Atiku and Defection

In 2006, Atiku founded and defected to the then Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), where he tried unsuccessfully to succeed his boss, Obasanjo. The former Vice President later abandoned the party he co-founded after discovering that his political interest could not be served by the then ACN, and headed back to PDP.

In 2013, Atiku led the G7 PDP Governors, also known as the “rebel” Governors to stage a walk-out at a National Convention Organized by PDP to fill the vacancy created by the irregularities pointed out by INEC on the election of some of the PDP National Working Committee Members.

Speculation that Atiku will join APC emerged after five of the PDP “rebel” governors dumped PDP  and defected to APC, just weeks after some of Atiku’s political associates also dumped the PDP and registered the People’s Democratic Movement (PDP) as a political party. It will be interesting to see what becomes of PDM. Some possible scenarios could be PDM later merging with APC or going into alliance with them (APC) just like APGA and Labour party are doing with PDP.
