Gov. Peter Obi yesterday commenced the building of 10 maternity projects in 10 rural communities of Anambra State. The project which will cost N30m per one is partly funded by the N150m prize money Anambra State received by coming first in the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation award as the best State in the South-East in immunisation. Anambra State Government is providing the rest of the money.
The benefitting communities are: Ugwuagba, Umuchu, Awba-Ofemili, Urum, Umueje,Umudioka, Isseke, Azigbo and Umunze.
Obi who had earlier presented the cheques of N30m each for the projects at Ugwuagba, Awba-Ofemili and Urum, yesterday presented the Cheques of N30m each for the projects at Umunze, domiciled at the Anglican DIcocesan Hospital and that at Umuchu, domiciled at the Catholic Visitation Hospital as well as another cheque of N50m for various ongoing projects at ST. Joseph Hospital, Adazi-Nnukwu.
Speaking at the Aguata Diocesan Hospital, Umunze, the Archbishop of the Anglican Archdiocese on the Niger, Most Rev. Christian Efobi, while thanking the Governor for his support to the people through the partnership with the Church, said he was a good example of what the Bible said that when the righteous are on the throne, the people rejoice.
Recalling that the Governor had earlier donated a brand new ambulance to the hospital, he thanked him for all his developmental efforts in the State. “Gov. Obi has the fear of God. He has taken development in the State to a new height. Driving from Ekwulobia to Umunze, one felt as if one were driving in Britain due to network of good roads. Our prayer is that the Governor-elect will be like Gov. Obi”, Efobi said. He also assured the Governor that the money will be used for the projects they were meant for.
In his own remarks, after receiving the combined cheques of N90m, the Bishop of Awka, Paulinus Ezeokafor , who described Gov. Obi as the new face of governance assured him that the partnership with the Church will continue to uplift the State.
Gov. Obi who assured that the money for all the projects being flagged-off has been set aside, said that the partnership with the Church had continued to give him joy because normal government contracts would not achieve 30% of the projects the Church executes with the money given to them.
