APGA crisis worsens as faction sacks Umeh, Shinkafi

By Obiora Ifoh

A faction of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) yesterday sacked its nation-al Chairman, Chief Victor Umeh and National Secretary Alhaji Sani Shinkafi over allegations of spend-ing party funds without due process.

The faction also appoint-ed the former Deputy Na-tional Chairman (North), Alhaji Sadiq Massala, as the acting Chairman and Dr. Ifedi Okwenna as the new acting Secretary.

But in a swift reaction, Umeh told National Mirror that he is still in charge as the people who purportedly removed him from office were not just disgruntled members of the party, but constituted only five out of 29 National Working Committee (NWC) members of the party and so, lacked the legal capacity to do so.

A four-page communiqué signed by Massala and Barrister Morgan Anyalechi, National Vice-Chairman (South), accused both Umeh and Shinkafi of several constitutional breaches in the running of the affairs of APGA.

The faction told news-men at the APGA National Secretariat at about 11.00 a.m., that the decision to suspend the duo was taken at the end of a meeting of the party’s NWC. The comunique stated: “Following a thorough analysis and in consideration of the relevant articles of the constitution of our great party, we unanimously suspended them indefinitely for actions which run counter to the spirit and letters of the con-stitution of our great party.”

But, Umeh, who arrived the national secretariat of the party moments later said that at no time did the NWC meet to take any decision as he remains the only authorised person who would convene such a meeting.

“The people who broke into our party secretariat were only five out of 29 members of the NWC. You and I know that in a democracy, for you to do anything successfully, you must have the required number,” he said.
