Anambra PDP Crisis Deepens as Senator Obiora, Maduabum, Okeke defect to ACN

Crisis that might cost Anambra State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) victory in the 2011 general elections has reared its head. Already, many prominent politicians in the party, including some members of National Assembly, had reportedly left the party for the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and other parties.

Daily Sun gathered that the party had split into three factions out of which two had already held their congresses while the third had slated today for its own congress. Investigations revealed that the Chief Benji Udozor-led faction, which was sponsored by Chief Chris Uba and his elder brother, Dr. Andy Uba, held their congress at its Udoka Estate secretariat with Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officials in attendance.

The second group, which had stalwarts like Senator Annie Okonkwo, Chief (Mrs.) Margie Okadigbo, Mr. Chuma Nzeribe, Dr. Tony Nwoye, former chairman, and others conducted its congress on Wednesday with the National Congress Committee taking charge.
The group was also said to be the one being supported by the National Chairman of the party, Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo.

However, the third faction, led by Chief Emma Nweze, whose executive was elected recently and which an Anambra High Court had declared as the authentic leadership of the party in the state had slated today for its congress. The group, which reportedly enjoys the sympathy of the South-east zonal executive, led by Chief Olisa Metuh, had postponed its congress, following protest that it did not see the congress committee from Abuja.

According to the faction in a press statement: “The five-man panel appointed by the National Working Committee (NWC) of PDP to supervise the conduct of the special ward congresses in Anambra State has not shown up in the state and their whereabouts is not known as at 2pm of December 28, 2010. Consequently, the Anambra State Executive Committee, after consultations with the aspirants and stakeholders of PDP, Anambra State, has approved postponement of the congress exercise.”

In another release, it said: “The attention of the Anambra State Executive Committee of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been drawn to the statement credited to the Chairman of the five-man Congress Monitoring Committee, appointed by the National Working Committee of PDP to monitor the conduct of special ward congresses for the purpose of electing the three ad hoc delegates, who, in turn, together with the members of the executive committees and other delegates, will elect candidates of the PDP for the 2011 general elections.”
Meanwhile, Daily Sun reported that following the unhealthy development in the party, some serious National Assembly members like Senator Ikechukwu Obiora, C.I.D Maduabum, Ralph Okeke, Odedo and many others have defected to the ACN.

Their defection was seen as a final blow to the PDP, which many had predicted, would meet more woes in the coming elections.
