Obasanjo slumps

FORMER President Olusegun Obasanjo slumped on Monday afternoon during a church service marking the 70th birthday of Major-Gen. Olu Bajowa in Igbotako, Okitipupa Local Government Area of Ondo State.

He was revived. And in 30 minutes, Gen. Obasanjo was back at the service.

Eyewitnesses said the special birthday service at the St. Stephen’s Anglican Church barely got underway around noon when Obasanjo, 73, suddenly developed stomach pains.

He slumped, causing a stir and halting the service –temporarily.

Among the bemused guests at the event were Rear Admiral Akin Aduwo; General Adeyinka Adebayo; former Ondo State Governor Olusegun Agagu and traditional rulers from Ikale communities.

There were also Ondo State Governor Olusegun Mimiko and top officials of his administration.

Obasanjo was rushed out of the church to the celebrator’s sickbay.

Doctors and nurses in Mimiko’s convoy revived the ex-president, it was learnt.

Shortly after he was revived, Obasanjo, looking unruffled, returned to the church to continue with the service.

He became the cynosure of all eyes when he walked back to take his seat, joining others in singing.

He was said to have joked about the incident after the service.

Many of the guests declined to comment on the incident.

But the ex-President’s spokesman Ojekunle Adeoba dismissed any fear over Obasanjo’s health, saying he is “very healthy”.

“He did not collapse; he is fine. I don’t know those who fabricated such lies. He has just come back from Ondo and from the Ibogun Day celebrations. He is very healthy and fine,” Adeoba told our correspondent on the telephone Tuesday.

Gen. Bajowa and Obasanjo were contemporaries in the military. Among other top positions, Gen. Bajowa was Aviation Minister.

Obasanjo has not completely slowed down in his activities since he stepped down from office in 2007. He still plays a major role in the activities of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He chairs the Board of Trustees (BOT).

He has also been active on the diplomatic scene, undertaking assignments for the United Nations (UN).

Obasanjo is also been on the social circuit. He was at ex-Osun State Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola’s party in his hometown Okuku, last month where he was involved in a brush with ex-Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose.
