PDP’s Waiver: Atiku, Akpabio fight get messy

The Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Chief Godswill Obot Akpabio has said that he has no apologies to offer for his support for President Goodluck Jonathan’s bid for the 2011 Presidential election and that as the Governor of a frontline Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) state, he had every right to air his views on matters affecting the party.

Reacting to comments credited to Senator Ben Obi, the Director General of Atiku Campaign Organization, the Godswill 2011 Campaign Organization said it strongly condemned Senator Obis comments that Governor Akpabio should not comment on issues of national importance.

The Campaign Organization particularly took exception to the description of Governor Akpabio as “a busy-body,” over what the group said was a simple request for clarification and status of the aspiration of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar in the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP).

In a statement issued by the Director of Media and Publicity, Mr. Anietie Ekong, the Organization said, “Whatever concocted consensus that threw up their principal as a presidential aspirant is of no interest to us, Those in the Atiku Campaign should remember that Akwa Ibom State is one state they would need delegates from. However, we wish to re-affirm that Governor Akpabio has no apologies for his unwavering support for President Goodluck Jonathan” Ekong said.

“We are appalled by Senator Obis comments assuming he was quoted correctly, We are surprised that the Director-General of a Presidential aspirant of the PDP saw nothing wrong with images of broom-wielding members of the old Action Congress (AC) with some of the leaders of the current Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) who milled around Alhaji Atiku Abubakar on national television during his purported announcement as the Northern consensus aspirant.

One wonders why such a misleading display should not be worrisome to a true member of the PDP. What we had expected Senator Obi to do was to tell Nigerians under which platform Alhaji Atiku Abubakar would be contesting in view of serious doubts cast around his aspiration which he has been variously presented as a candidate of the opposition party and as representing a section of the country” the statement added.

According to the campaign organization, Senator Obis unwarranted outburst was a reflection of the desperation from their political camp, whose obsession with power has seen them criss-crossing political camps and parties, and forging strange alliances in a bid to acquire political power.

The Campaign Organization said the vision and determination of the Akpabio administration has led to the completion of the Ibom International Airport, Ibom Power Plant, construction of over 205 roads, three flyovers, a new Government House, 863 rural electrification projects, the first e-library in West Africa, the first ever underground drainage system, over 3,000 life-touching, rural projects across the 329 wards in the state, five brand new General Hospitals, and a new International Specialist Hospital among other projects.

  1. Akpabio really is a liability to himself. He is the joker. Firstly he was never elected to the office of the Governor in Akwa Ibom State. He was merely imposed on the AKS people by Obasanjo who wanted to please Andy Uba his ‘son’ because Akpabio is married to Andy’s sister. So nothing more is to be expected from a political novice, such as Akpabio. He will never be relevant in the political world. He should therefore stick to what he knows best, sycophancy. A word they say is enough for the wise.
