2011: YARADUA’S CABAL ROMANCES JONATHAN

Turai, the arrow head of the late Yaradua cabal.

Members of the kitchen cabinet of the late President Umaru Yar’Adua are now making overtures to President Goodluck Jonathan to carry them along in the bid to form the next government after the 2011 general elections.

Investigations revealed that the cabal are also ready to support President Jonathan in next year’s polls, as a way of showing their loyalty to the aspiration of the president.

It was gathered that the stance of the Yar’Adua’s loyalists arose from the decision of the leadership of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that Jonathan should be allowed to contest next year’s presidential election on the basis that he would be continuing the Yar’Adua/Jonathan ticket that came to office in 2007.

The party leaders agreed to the measure to ward off pressure on the party to stick to the zoning arrangement put in place by the party.

However, Yar’Adua’s loyalists led by former Economic Adviser to the President, Dr Taminu Yakubu, told PDP leaders close to Jonathan that it would be morally wrong to shut them off, given the fact that the party agreed that Jonathan is still continuing the Yar’Adua/Jonathan ticket.

They also argued that since Yar’Adua was the leader of the group when he was alive, Yar’Adua’s aspect of the ticket should not be cut off just like that.

However, it was gathered that some supporters of Jonathan are wary of accepting the offer by the Yar’Adua group.

Their major fear is that the same set of people constituted a stumbling block to the emergence of Jonathan as acting president when Yar’Adua took ill and only softened their stance when Yar’Adua died in May.

They are also apprehensive of the role of some members of the group in the ongoing controversy trailing the zoning formula.

Meanwhile, the National President of Goodluck Nigeria, one of the groups canvassing for the president to contest next year’s presidential poll, Alhaji Lekan Yusuf, has said supporters of the president will not allow opportunists to creep into the political structure of the president.

Speaking on the phone from his Abuja base, he opined that the administration of Yar’Adua was populated by self-serving people.

He recalled how some people in the cabinet held the nation by the jugular even when it was apparent that the late president was not in the best frame to continue to lead the nation.

“We all saw how some people held everybody to ransom. They behaved as if they were above the law and more painful is the fact that in spite of the poor state of health of the late president, they held him hostage and almost pushed the nation down the precipice.

“If such people are now saying they have turned a new leaf, they must be scrutinized carefully to determine the genuineness of their new position. President Goodluck Jonathan wants the best for Nigeria and we are ready to support him to achieve that. Those who think they can use cunning methods to come and feather their nests will be disappointed,” he said.
