ATIKU IS NOT YET A MEMBER OF PDP – GOV. NYAKO

If the Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar thinks his only hurdle for the presidency come 2011 is the waiver from the national secretariat of his party, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), then he has a shocker waiting for him.

Going by the declaration of the governor of his state, Adamawa Murtala Nyarko, the former vice president is yet to be admitted into the party and this is one of the first step he must fulfill before he could participate in the primaries to pick the party flag bearer for the presidential election in 2011.

Atiku declared his intention to run for the presidency in the 2011 presidential election on Sunday on the platform of PDP. And has even applied to the National secretariat of the party for a waiver.

But his governor who is also the party leader in his home state yon Tuesday, 17/08/2010 at the the presidential villa, Abuja told newsmen that the former vice president is “not yet a member of the party in Adamawa state”

Atiku according to the governor is yet to fulfill the necessary requirement for readmission into the party he left about three years ago.

Though the governor said the waiver he sought can only come from the national secretariat of the party, he however quickly added that he can get that only after the state re-absolves him.

On why the state is dilly- dallying with the readmission of the vice president who happens to be a founding member of the party, the governor said while he was leaving the party, he fought with virtually everybody and went to form another party and now he wants to come back just like that.

The governor further noted that it is not just enough for him to go to the national headquarters to announce his return, he must follow the normal procedures. “Once he clears the situation” he will be readmitted, the governor said.

On the value the vice president will be adding to the party, Nyarko said if he will be coming back with nuisance value he is not welcome. Noting that the state has been peaceful for a while now and the state would not want somebody that will come to obstruct the peace in the state. Citing example of the recent change of guard at the state assembly, the governor said some of his supporters claimed to be the brain behind the crisis. Their intention according to him was to cause rift between the legislative arm and the executive.

He however added that if he is coming back to the party with a positive motive, he is welcome, but he must followed the procedure.
