A major crisis is brewing in the Anambra state chapter of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), following the influx of members of the People Democratic Party (PDP) into the party in recent times. APGA is the ruling party in the state.

The latest defector from PDP to APGA is Senator Joy Emodi, from Anambra North Senatorial zone. She followed the foot steps of Hon. Uche Ekwunife, a member of the House of Repesentatives who defected from the Progressive Peoples Alliance (PPA).

Before now, members of the state House of Assembly including Hon. Chinwe Nwebili (Ogbaru II), Benson Nwawulu (Ogbaru I) and Sylvester Okeke (Anaocha I) constituencies had defected to APGA.

The Nation reported that no fewer than 15 other members of the PDP in the House of Assembly are likely to dump the crisis-ridden PDP for APGA. Among them is Speaker Anayo Nnebe.

Emodi and Ekwunife said their defection was based on the unending crisis tearing PDP apart in Anambra state, which according to them, would jeopardize their chances of seeking re-election.

Following the exodus of PDP members and other party faithful to APGA, the special Adviser to Governor Peter Obi on inter party relations, Chief Ben Obi, told The Nation on Thursday that there was no room for automatic ticket for anybody in APGA

“APGA is not like PDP, in a place where you have two or more aspirants gunning for the same position, the next option for the party will be for primaries to be conducted for the aspirants”

“Nobody in APGA should claim that the party’s ticket had been given to him or her, there is no provision for such arrangement in APGA. Favouring any aspirant will bring serious problems in the party in Anambra state.”

“APGA believes in due process, even the governor does not have the capacity to impose anybody on the party, so those who are joining the party now should equally cue up because APGA is an orderly party” Obi said.

Another aspirant who declared his intention to vie against Ekwunife for Anaocha, Dunukofia and Njikoka Federal constituency under the platform of APGA is Barrister Cosmas Emenike Ndulue.

He said the APGA constitution says anybody who wants to vie for any position should at least, be a member of the party for six month, adding that the party should stick to the proviso.

Ndulue stated that since APGA is a party that frowns against godfatherism in the country’s politics, it should not allow itself to be hoodwinked into believing in it, as according to him, “it is likely to destroy the party.”

Some APGA faithful, who spoke with The Nation in Awka on Thursday, revealed that about four other members of the House of Representatives had declared their intentions to pitch tent with APGA in no distant time.

Also Senator Annie Okonkwo, representing Anambra Central Senatorial zone, who hosted a town hall meeting in his zone last weekend, may also be heading to APGA.
