UCHE EKWUNIFE: WELCOME TO APGA, WHERE IS YOUR NEXT DESTINATION?

Uche-Ekwunife

Hon. Uche Ekwunife

Hon Uche Ekwunife, the member representing  Anaocha/Njikoka/Dunukofia Federal Constituency may have unknowingly, boldly written her name in the list of “food is Ready” politicians in Nigeria with her last Saturdays’ defection to the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

The Anambra Lawmaker who left her Banking career to join Politics is in the news again. Ekwunife who until Saturday 31st of July was a member of PDP in the House of Representatives had defected to Progressive Peoples Alliance (PPA) under which she won the party’s ticket and contested the February 6, Governorship election in Anambra State.
Hon. Ekwunife having lost the keenly contested election to Peter Obi, the present Governor of Anambra State, retreated. She dumped PPA despite entreaties from former Abia Governor Orji Kalu who also was the Party’s Board of Trustee Chairman and returned to Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Convinced that she might not have the needed political space as a returnee member in PDP, Hon Ekwunife took off again! This time to All Progressives Grand Alliance, a Party she contested against and lost the Anambra governorship election in a manner an APGA Chieftain who attended Hon Ekwunife’s last weekends’ defection rally described as ‘if you cant beat them, you join them’ brand of politics.
Our source who preferred to be anonymous and who is a PPA Local Government Chairman told Destination Nigeria that with the outcome of the February 6 Governorship election in Anambra State, the new leadership in INEC as well as the forth coming Local Government Elections in Anambra State, Politicians mostly from Anambra are re-strategising by joining APGA in order to remain relevant beyond 2011.

APGA who recently has become a beautiful bride of Anambra politics had last Month witnessed yet another defection from two members of Anambra State House of Assembly.
As all these defections continue unabated, Destination Nigeria investigations revealed that PDP has been the weeping child. Virtually all the decampees in APGA are from PDP. There is a strong but unconfirmed rumour that members of Anambra State House of Assembly would in a couple of weeks declare for APGA.
An APGA chieftain who attended the defection rally from PDP into APGA by the two Anambra Lawmakers in Ogbaru was quoted by media reports as boasting that “very soon we would be talking of an APGA controlled Legislature in the State”
Destination Nigeria further investigation revealed that Iyom Ekwunife (a name given to her during her governorship electioneering campaign) has never been a principled politician. Hence she was able to join three parties in five months.
Mrs Ekwunife came to lime light during the tenure of Chinwoke Mbadinuju as Anambra Governor. She was said to be very close to the Governor at that time. Then she was working as the Branch Manager of Standard Trust Bank Awka a position she was elevated to in the organisation following her ability to win Anambra Government accounts. She was later moved to Enugu as Regional Manager and later to Abuja.
When Mbadinuju fell out with Chris Uba aka eselu Uga and subsequently lost Anambra governorship election to Chris Ngige. Uche Ekwunife immediately switched over to Chris Uba.
During the Ngige/Uba saga in Anambra, Ngige had alleged that Chris Uba wanted him to appoint Ekwunife the Commissioner for finance. Although Ekwunife quickly denied the rumour in the media, people who were close to Governor Ngige at that time said she lied.
Ekwunife later joined the mainstream politics and through Andy Uba, she got PDP ticket and contested for Federal House of Representatives in 2007. The same Andy Undy Ubah she left PDP and contested the Anambra February 6 Governorship election against.
Having moved to APGA from PPA/PDP, observers of Anambra politics are certain that this is definitely not her last destination. Many are watching to see where her next political journey will take her to.

  1. I think in politics what we have is permanent INTREST and not permanent FRIEND , so as long as Hon. Uche is still carrying the intrest of the people she is representing in mind the party she enters should not be a major concern now. Again IYOM was not given to her during her governorship campaign rather it is a chieftancy title confered on her by her people due her good and humanitarian works and it was confered on her even before she enters politics.

  2. Hon Uche is one that has the butts to stand in the what Nigerians describes as the men field. i commend her courage and her bold step to contest the governorship race in Anambra state and including her spirit of sportsmanship in accepting the out come of the said election, is another kudos to her political maturity. if i have my way i would gladly support her continuity with my widows might.
I still pray dat when it is igbos turn 2 aspire for presidency that such Amazon women like her and Dr, joy emodi, Prof dora akunyili Etc will all aspire for the said exalted sit like Hilary Clinton.
