ANSIEC releases LG election timetable, guidelines

THE Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC), in Awka, on Monday, released the timetable and guidelines for the conduct of December 4 local governments election in the state.

The chairman of the commission, Professor Titus Eze, charged political parties to assist the commission by ensuring internal democracy in their system.

According to Eze, the trouble with elections at any level in the country was the imposition of candidates by political parties.

Eze said if the parties fielded popular candidates, there would be no need for unpopular ones to bring the “do-or-die mentality” into the contest.

On the concern expressed by stakeholders over the inadequacies in the existing voters’ register for Anambra, he said the problem was being addressed in line with the provisions of the law.

“We call on all the stakeholders to support the efforts of the commission to conduct free, fair, credible and accepted local council elections,” Eze said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that public campaigns would commence on August 2 and end on December 2.

The guidelines also stated that aspirants to the post of councillors would pay a non-refundable deposit of N50,000 to the commission, while those for the chairmanship position would pay N200,000.
