North warns Jonathan

The north yesterday warned Acting President Goodluck Jonathan against planning to contest the presidential election in 2011, saying there is no way such an idea will work.

It also lashed out at those plotting to remove the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Vincent Ogbulafor. It said the plot will fail and the plotters will risk the wrath of the region.

The body said attempts by some PDP members to impeach Ogbulafor and the present leadership of the party would be seen as a plot targeted at the north with the sole aim of stopping the geo- political region from completing its eight year term in the presidency.

Daily Champion learnt over the weekend from a reliable source that some key members of the party rooting for Jonathan to contest the 2011 election have been secretly plotting to remove Ogbulafor by next month and replace him with Chief Hope Uzodinma, a close associate of former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

In a statement singed by the National President of Arewa Youth Forum (AYF), Gambo Ibrahim Gujunju, the group warned Jonathan to avoid those tempting him with the idea of working against the leadership of the party in order to run for 2011 presidency and urge him to be wary of bad advisers saying they were his real enemies and that of the Nigerian people.

While advising Jonathan to consult with the party’s leadership in running the affairs of the nations, the north exonerating Ogbulafor of any corruption charges, saying that Ogbulafor’s problem started with his proclamation that the party would maintain its zoning arrangement which allows power to remain in the north till 2015.

Gambo said: “Those who thought and went ahead to gossip that the Ogbulafor’s statement on power staying in the north till 2015 was an affront to Jonathan missed the point as the courageous stand by Ogbulafor saved the PDP and by extension, Nigeria from implosion”

The group said Ogbulafor’s statement brought stability to the nation, berating those they claimed to have taken advantage of the ill-health of President Umaru Yar’Adua to foment trouble by creating credibility problem for the PDP.

It commended Ogbulafor who through his mature style of leadership, navigated Nigeria out of the pit dug for it by those who toiled to see the disintegration of the country.

The group claimed that the current PDP leadership has proved that it is made up of men of honour with the highest sense of patriotism which history. It called on Jonathan to be wary of the present crop of latter-day advisers milling around him as they are indeed real enemies of the PDP and its leadership.

The AYF then implored the Acting President to continue to support the PDP and its leadership saying that as a good party man, it behooves him to provide leadership to the party and sustain it in all legitimate means.

It urged Ogbulafor to remain focused and continue to support the Presidency and the Acting President particularly at this time when doomsday prophets have been shamed, adding that he should not be distracted by disgruntled and reactionary elements plotting the disintegration of Nigeria.
